Winter on Mount Brocken

Brocken, the highest mountain in Northern Germany (1143 m), is famous for its harsh climate and represents a rigorous test environment for wind sensors. Our new sonic versions were operated here successfully in winter 2011/2012. The main change with regard to former models is the replacement of brazen material by stainless steel. Due to the limited thermal conductivity of stainless steel the implementation of an efficient and sufficient heating power turned out to be a challenge and called for verification in field tests.

In October 2011 a scanning MIRA35 joined IFTs comprehensive instrumentation for cloud and aerosol research. The possibility of ship – borne operation is one request for this installation. Therefore the radar antenna including transceiver, signal processing, control electronics and two -axis scanning unit is mounted on a lift table in a sea container. The picture shows the radar in operation position on top of the container. The aggregates for air condition and waveguide pressurization remain in the container. For safe transportation the complete radar can be lowered into the container.
