At the new measurement platform of the Industrial Engineer Institute of Catania University a brand new Sodar-RASS-System has been installed.
With this system, a profiling of wind, turbulence and temperature is possible, as well as the synchronous determination of temperature gradients and inversion layers. Because of the specific geographical situation around Catania, it is possible to investigate the land and sea breeze, which has an enormous impact on the air quality of this region. The movements of the Etna volcano dust during eruptions are also investigated. SODAR and RASS data measurements are integrated with an ultrasonic anemometer uSonic-3.
The installation and set-up was supported by Servizi Territorio srl who also provide the further technical support to the SODAR-RASS and several other meteorological systems in Catania.
